Clinical research is focused on disease prevention to improve quality of life alongside longevity. Human aging is associated with increased organ dysfunction, propensity for falls resulting in trauma, and overall decline in quality of life. Insights from foundational science are used in the clinic to drive preventative medicine and guide patients towards living healthier longer.

PROJECT 1 - PI : May Bakir

Cardiovascular disease in women across the lifespan

Dr. Bakir’s continued research and passion is focused on heart disease in women, preventive cardiology, coronary physiology/pathophysiology and advanced cardiac imaging, as well as alternative and complementary medicine approaches to heart disease. Specifically:

1. Relating diastolic dysfunction to cardiac disease in younger women.

2. Quality improvement at our medical center for treating women appropriately per guidelines and increasing treatment adequately. Are our patients who are labeled “statin intolerant” screened for vitamin D deficiency? Are they treated for vitamin D deficiency if found, and then given a retrial of statin therapy if their ASCVD risk score indicates they should be on statin therapy?

PROJECT 2 - PI: Holly Mattix-Kramer

The multi-ethnic study of atherosclerosis (MESA)

The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis was initiated in July 2000 to investigate the prevalence, correlates, and progression of subclinical cardiovascular disease (CVD) in a population-based sample of 6,500 men and women aged 45-84 years.
