Foundational research
Molecular mechanisms of cellular pathways have traditionally been discovered in static systems and viewed as fixed across time. We now recognize that physiological systems are dynamic, flexible, and interconnected. Our goal is to identify how cellular and molecular pathways change across the lifespan to serve as a foundation for identifying the molecular basis of age-related disease and to inform strategies for maintaining healthy cellular functions in advanced age. CHARM also strongly advocates for research that focuses on women’s health and the unique biological aspects of female physiology.
Clinical research
CHARM promotes clinical research through interprofessional collaboration with nationally recognized physician-scientist experts in a broad range of specialties. CHARM Co-Director, Dr. May Bakir, leads the Loyola Women’s Heart Health Program and focuses on training residents on the unique cardiac needs of women throughout their lifetime.
